Project of the Week for March 20, 2017: Ji Hotel Xiamen Zhongshan Road Pedestrian Street

2,368 sq. ft. Greenwall

Project of the Week Mini Description & Details

Since 2014, the Huazhu Hotel Group and the Accor Hotels Group have formed a long-term strategic alliance to jointly develop the hotel business in China, including the Ji Hotel Xiamen Zhongshan Road Pedestrian Street, which serves the mid-range market. Opened in 2015, the 5-story hotel has 150 guest rooms perfect for business and leisure travelers. A large verdant green wall from Elmich is a significant aesthetic feature for the hotel’s façade to welcome its guests. Measuring 6 metres (19 feet) in height the distinctive living wall is highly visible from travelers visiting Zhongshan Road, a major tourist spot with many shops and restaurants. In addition to its lush greenery, the green wall will improve the air quality in the area and assist to keep the hotel building cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.

The Elmich VersiWall® GM (VGM) modules each contain a geotextile bag filled with a primarily inorganic soil-less lightweight planting media. Pre-planting of the modules 6 to 8 weeks prior to installation in a controlled nursery environment enabled selected green wall plants to be firmly established and oriented vertically. The VGM mounting system is equipped with anti-lift arms and the pilaster mounting rails were bolted directly to the wall to facilitate firm and secure anchorage of the VGM modules to the wall. In September 2016 the green wall was subjected to a wind gust speed of around 170 km/h when Super Typhoon ‘Meranti’ made landfall in Xiamen City, bringing heavy downpours and causing major disruptions to the electricity and water supplies affecting more than 3.2 million homes located in the region. The before and after photos below show how the Ji Hotel Xiamen Zhongshan Road Pedestrian Street’s green wall remained intact despite the battering of Meranti. In this instance, it was a real test of nature to prove the green wall system’s wind uplift resistance.

Anyone in our industry who yearns for a combination of travel and experiencing first hand a multitude of different greenroofs and greenwalls from across the planet simply must watch “Versatile Living Walls & Roofs: International Applications for Agriculture, Energy Conservation, Pollution Attenuation, and Aesthetics” by Dr. Bob Cameron from our Greenroofs & Walls of the World Virtual Summit 2015 ~ Connecting the Planet with Living Architecture: People, Projects & Design above or on our VS2015 Virtual Summit 2015 playlist on our GreenroofsTV channel on YouTube.

It’s been a year since we concluded our third Greenroofs & Walls of the World Virtual Summit, and as promised, we are now releasing the 23 videos from our 30+ international speakers to the general public.

Virtual Summit 2015 Video Versatile Living Walls Roofs Bob Cameron

Many of us know or know of Bob’s years of research at Penn State, and that in addition to being extremely knowledgeable and personable, he is a great presenter with a wonderful and genuine smile.  Aramis and I have had the pleasure of knowing him for years!  In this video Bob says the journey should be just as interesting as the destination, so join him in his world travels and discussions of the various issues regarding living walls and roofs he confronted in India, China, and South Korea, among other locales.

He also contributed at last year’s Virtual Summit 2015 in the “From Passive House to the Cold North—How Vegetative Envelope Components Impact Buildings” Panel Session with Dr. Bob Cameron, Dr. Allen Lee, Dr. Karen Liu, and Chris Wark.  Bob also participated at our Virtual Summit 2013 on the Panel Session “Theory & Field Studies: An Interview with Dr. Ian Balcom from Lyndon State College of Vermont & Dr. Robert Cameron from Penn State – Phytoremediation Chapter Two” with Patrick Carey.

And, in case you missed it, read Dr. Bob Cameron’s May 2015 Guest Feature research article “An Integrated Biofilter System to Contribute to Net Zero Architecture while Providing Decentralized Wastewater Treatment” on Greenroofs.com.

Robert “Bob” D. Cameron, PhD

Virtual Summit 2015 Video Versatile Living Walls Roofs Bob Cameron

University Park, PA, USA. Bob spent more than two decades directing the global environmental programs of a Fortune 30 multi-national conglomerate. In the late ‘70s in collaboration with NASA, he designed, permitted, and constructed the first constructed wetlands to treat wastewater from the natural gas industry. Working on every continent except Antarctica, Bob designed award winning environmental programs based on sustainability concepts. Later as President of his own corporation, he de-engineered historic buildings destined for the wrecking ball, which he then relocated and reconstructed with green architectural features.

Pursuing a life-long goal, he recently earned his doctorate from Penn State University at the Center for Green Roof Research. His thesis entailed the invention and construction of a functional architectural system to attenuate wastewater pollutants while reducing a building’s energy use and providing a platform for urban agriculture. Currently (as of February, 2015), Bob has an appointment with the Department of Landscape Architecture at Penn State University and teaches collegiate courses and conducts research on greenroofs, livings walls, constructed wetlands, aquaponics, and artificial islands while also managing Eco Applied Technologies, a consulting firm for commercial, residential, and industrial applications. He has lectured on sustainable technologies around the world and in 2013 he literally circumnavigated the globe while working on environmental issues in numerous countries, including teaching environmental engineering for several months at a Chinese university which culminated in the design and construction of a living wall with the students. See the 2:45 video of his early work at Penn State “Robert Cameron investigates biofilters to clean dirty water.”

Shanghai Tobacco Factory
Shanghai, China

Shanghai Tobacco Factory1

Project Description & Details

Starting in 2008 with completion in 2012, AS. Architecture-Studio designed and oversaw the construction of two new buildings and restoration of an existing building for the Zhonghua Tobacco Factory, also known as the Shanghai Tobacco Factory, which manufactures luxury cigarettes. Located in the Yangpu District near the Huangpu River in Shanghai, the urban, architectural, and landscape redevelopment of the 106,500 m² site sought to integrate large industrial buildings within a highly urbanized area. A roof garden with a total area of about 8,000 square meters was desired by the client and installed alongside exhaust pipes, cooling towers, and other industrial elements on the roof.

Due to roof construction constraints in addition to summer temperatures over 50 degrees C (122 degrees F), the Modular Greening Unit from Shenzhen Green Ark Technology Co was specified, which can also store rainwater. A variety of grasses, flowers, vegetables, shrubs, and small trees were planted in a substrate thickness of 35 cm. The colorful shrubs and tall fescue were designed with an interval collocation for tone, in a French romantic style; a sprinkler irrigation system waters the plants once per week. Because of the special features of the building, the insulation layer has a thickness of 50 cm, a waterproofing layer by Sika Sarnafil, and floor tiles cover the remaining area. Taking into account the needs of the plant growth according to the thickness of the matrix, two types of modules were used at 30 cm and 35 cm high. The roof greening project took only 48 days to be completed and AS. Architecture-Studio says “the new buildings fit perfectly into their environment and provide good thermal insulation and reduce energy consumption.” Six months after its completion, colorful, lush plants were blowing in the breeze as a wave travels up and down, as beautiful as a painting.
