With the extreme weather events of the past month—hurricanes, floods, drought and wildfires—it may indeed be time to more urgently think about water resilience and water risk mitigation. How are you and your community incorporating water resilience and water sustainability in planning and design? When water quality hangs in the balance, and we have too much or too little water, what is the downstream effect?

Water resilience and technology

We know that our communications and energy infrastructure can be crippled by a severe storm, but how can technology help us predict and model our design shortcomings? Technology can help us track performance of our infrastructure, including rainwater quantity and quality, potable water quality, wastewater processing and water access.

We can use an emerging set of tools to adapt to the “new normal” of our severe weather cycles. At this year’s WaterBuild Summit, we will be talking about and applying some of the emerging technologies, as well as revisiting some of the existing technologies that might help us plan better and adapt better in the long term.

Water resilience and equity

Many residents displaced by flood events do not have the available resources to rebuild new homes, restore their old homes or return to live in recovering communities. When the water rises or spoils, it does so indiscriminately. Its impacts are rarely felt equally.

How we plan for those often predictable impacts, and how we provide support services doesn’t have to be indiscriminate; it can be done with intention. This year’s WaterBuild program will build on the 2016 summit and deepen discussion on this important topic, giving consideration to how water can negatively impact a community and how to design with greater equity in mind.

Water resilience and grey/green infrastructure

We have developed amazing feats of engineering to manage and mitigate risks to water quantity and quality. When deployed effectively, these can complement nature’s many tools in its toolbox.

Engaging communities and design teams in dialogue about how to apply both grey and green infrastructure to have the greatest impact on adaptation is essential to developing solutions that will last. There are many dimensions to infrastructure development. Considering the greatest multiple outcomes of a solution set will set the standard of gaining the greatest return on investment.

“The U.S. Green Building Council is committed to developing practical solutions to social equity challenges, including those that arise from issues related to bias in communities of diverse racial, economic and social composition. At the heart of the summit will be the belief that equitable access to quality water is paramount to resilience. In order to ensure the safety and security of diverse communities, we must address concerns around potable water availability and use, water capture and treatment, water reuse, wastewater management, and more.” ~ WaterBuild 2017

Joanne Rodriguez has two decades of experience working within the building products and construction communities, with an emphasis on sustainable building impacts and high performance building envelope assemblies. In 2017 she fully launched GreenStructure–a multi-disciplinary environmental consulting firm founded in 2012, housing over 20 years of experience in the built environment. With expertise in strategic sustainability and resiliency planning, she has coupled her highly technical background with the emerging trends in ecosystems and risk mitigation to become a green infrastructure asset specialist. GreenStructure has experience in zero-landfill and waste diversion programming, energy efficiency audits, and sustainable roof and building envelope solutions.

At Tremco, she was responsible for the development of sales and marketing platforms focused on sustainability in the built environment. She was responsible for the implementation of programs like Roof Recycling and Zero Landfill. She has worked with architects and engineers across the country in the development of specifications and drawings that meet the highest technical standards. LEED AP through the USGBC, she is a former member of the Construction Specifications Institute Strategic Planning Task Team, past President of Chicago CSI, a frequent National speaker on topics related to sustainability impacts (water, energy, air) of building envelope technologies, as well as a speaker and participant for the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) America meetings in Chicago and Denver focusing on Women in the Workforce and Sustainable Buildings. She has participated as an expert in the first two Resilient Cities Summits, hosted by the National League of Cities, Urban Land Institute and USGBC, intended to address urban issues related to health, wellness, and resilient design solutions. Rodriguez was the co-Chair of Tremco Group’s Green Chemistry team, which worked to examine the potential hazards and risk posed to employees, contractors and community through raw material and product usage.

She is on the EPA’s Environmentally Preferred Purchasing Pilot Panel for Paints/Coatings, helping to develop the technical framework of how the Federal Government will purchase materials now and in the future. She is currently a part of the USGBC WaterBuild Advisory Group for GreenBuild 2017 and was a speaker at the International Roofing Expo, as well as a Keynote Speaker for Greenroofs.com Virtual Roof and Wall Summit 2017. Joanne has participated as a moderator and in design Charrettes for Cities Alive. Her vast experience working across many stakeholders has proven to be beneficial in addressing complex issues related to material use, health related impacts, durability and life-cycle impacts.

Located at the geographical center of Berlin, the award winning Potsdamer Platz is a historic square reborn since fall of the Berlin Wall. As the meeting point of the city’s five most bustling streets, the revitalized 1.3 hectare entertainment hub is a unique blend of art, entertainment, shopping, corporate centers, and one of Europe’s premiere urban quarters known for exceptional and ground-breaking architecture. Potsdamer Platz was razed during World War II and redeveloped after the reunification of East and West Berlin in 1990. The site of the old Berlin Wall, Potsdamer Platz entailed rebuilding the heart of post-Cold War Berlin into the new capital’s city center. It was designed by an international team of architects headed by Renzo Piano.

Redeveloped by Daimler, the water sensitive urban design, building-integrated water recycling systems and industrial regeneration have come to represent an iconic symbol of designing “Green and Blue” urban waterscapes using rainwater where it falls. Designed by Studio Dreiseitl, this includes Potsdamer Platz’s 30,000 m2 or about 323,000 square feet of greenroofs. The stormwater management, harvesting and recycling system is fed by the city’s 21 inches of annual rainwater. The greenroofs retain and then release water to the large on-site buffer pond which has five underground storage tanks. Cisterns provide water for the 3-acre artificial Piano Lake, and approximately 4 million gallons of water are circulated though filtration beds once every three days.

The excess overflow water is used as grey water for toilet flushing, irrigation, and fire systems. The cleansed water flows into a beautiful large piazza for visitors to enjoy. In all, the Potsdamer Platz manages an estimated 23,000 m³ per year of potable water and its cooling capacity reduces summer temperatures by approximately 2°C. Always bustling with people, restaurants and activity, the popular Potsdamer Platz is a favorite destination of both locals and tourists alike with up to 100,000 visiting per day.

Situated in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, the world’s first and largest double LEED Platinum museum, the California Academy of Sciences boasts exhibition space, education, conservation and research beneath one large greenroof. The CAS was designed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop along with a slew of other professionals. A single building beneath the new 2.5-acre living roof houses Academy components that once stretched across 12 structures including the Morrison Planetarium, Kimball Natural History Museum and Steinhart Aquarium.

Rana Creek Living Architecture worked with Renzo Piano Building Workshop, Chong and Partners Architecture, SWA Group, ARUP, and the Academy to design the living roof with seven dramatic hills and four steeply sloped domes, replicating the surrounding rolling hills. Dotted with circular skylights fitted with heat sensors, the skylights can open to further cool the building when needed.

The undulating living roof sits 35 feet in the air and is planted with over 50 native wildflowers and other species. An open-air observation terrace enables visitors to get a close-up look at the roof’s lush canopy of plants. With slopes up to 60 degrees, a biodegradable modular system was developed (later purchased by Tremco), and 50,000 biodegradable modular BioTrays™ were planted. The Garden Roof® Assembly, Ultimate Assembly®, and waterproofing were supplied by American Hydrotech. Surrounded by 60,000 photovoltaic cells, up to 10% of energy needs are supplied and it prevents the release of more than 405,000 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions annually. The BioTrays keep interior temperatures about 10° F cooler, reduce low frequency noise by 40 dB, decrease the ambient Urban Heat Island effect being 40° cooler, and absorb about 98% of stormwater, preventing up to 3.6 million gallons of runoff per year. A masterpiece of sustainable architecture, blending seamlessly into its setting while employing a wide variety of innovative features and operations to minimize its footprint, the California Academy of Sciences and its Living Roof is the “greenest museum in the world.”

Located in the heart of Vancouver, BC, the spectacular 22-hectare (55-acre) VanDusen Botanical Garden is renowned internationally for its beauty and for leadership in plant conservation, biodiversity and sustainability. Exceeding LEED Platinum standards, the Living Building Challenge certified VanDusen Botanical Garden Visitor Centre uses renewable sources found on-site to meet net-zero energy annually.

Photovoltaics on the roof create electricity for the Centre, and hot water is provided by a biomass boiler fed by dry wood waste reclaimed from the surrounding area. Rainwater is filtered and used for the Centre’s greywater requirements; 100% of blackwater is treated by the on-site bioreactor.

Designed by Perkins+Will and Cornelia Oberlander with Sharp and Diamond Landscape Architects (now Connect Landscape Architecture), the dynamic single-story structure includes an innovative prefabricated roof form that appears to float above the building’s curved rammed earth and concrete walls.  The Centre was inspired by the leaves and flower of an orchid. The undulating green roofs are located on the “petals” and are planted with grasses and colorful bulbs. The multi-petaled structure’s circular space is topped by a daylit oculus with a slope over 45 degrees which also serves as a solar chimney that exhausts hot air.

With slopes ranging from 2 degrees to 50 degrees, this project used three different greenroof systems: the “ZinCo Perennial Garden,” “ZinCo Sloping Meadow,” and the oculus roof with a slope of more than 45 degrees which was installed with the “ZinCo Steep Sloping Meadow” system including the Georaster elements for growing media retention. The vegetated land ramp connects the greenroof to the ground plane, encouraging use by local fauna and promoting biodiversity. The multi-award winning VanDusen Botanical Garden Visitor Centre is truly a living building embracing bio-mimicry and is open to the public daily.
