Celebrate World Green Roof Day #WGRD2020 on June 6th!

June 6, 2020 is the inauguration of World Green Roof Day #WGRD2020

Join us and your colleagues from all over the Earth in showcasing greenroofs on Saturday, June 6!

We here at Greenroofs.com are very happy to help promote this international event. Aramis and I had a fun time at Rock Mill Park here a few days ago in Alpharetta, Georgia while creating our pieces for Dusty Gedge who put the promo videos together.

What is #WGRD?

#WGRD2020

Don’t miss Aramis passionately doing his piece in Spanish here:

#WGRD2020 and GRO

World Green Roof Day #WGRD2020 was created by Chris Bridgman of Bridgman & Bridgman in part to push the establishment of the new GRO (Green Roof Organisation, website live soon) in the UK but in the main to celebrate greenroofs around the world.

Despite the restrictions created by the Coronavirus pandemic, this is an exciting time for GRO, say the leaders. The newly elected Board is proactively driving GRO forward and developing its influence on the UK Green, Blue and BioSolar roofing markets.

#WGRD2020

“This is an exciting time for the green roof sector and we recognise that as a Trade Association we are in a stronger position to further progress the needs of the sector, our members, and the supply chain. Phase one of Green Roof training is currently available and Phase two was launched in April 2020. Combined, these two phases facilitate the achievement of a CSCS card in green roofing.

To further strengthen the green roof industry we are working on an update to the GRO Code which will include Blue Roofs and Bio Solar Roofs with an ambition to launch around World Green Roof Day on 6th June 2020.” ~ GRO Chair Mark Harris

#WGRD2020

World Green Roof Day #WGRD2020 was quickly embraced by all GRO members including Dusty Gedge, President of the European Federation of Green Roof Associations(EFB) and Founder of Livingroofs.org. Up until now Livingroofs.org had been representing the UK at a European level because there had been no official trade body. Now the official body, GRO is sponsoring #WGRD2020 and as a board member Dusty will continue to represent the UK at a European and international level on behalf of GRO.

“Because of my EFB presidency and connections around the world, I was asked to front it and to help ensure it is a global event – I have reached out to all continents around the world – so let’s celebrate green roofs around the world – and create more in the very near future.” ~ Dusty Gedge

Spread the #WGRD2020 word on social media on June 6

#WGRD2020

As I always say, “Love the Earth, Plant a Roof (or Wall),” but on World Green Roof Day, June 6th, we’re focusing on greenroofs! We want you to post your favorite photos and videos of a wide assortment of greenroofs from across the globe on your own favorite social media using #WGRD2020.

“So get your pictures ready – whether it be on a shed or on a large retail unit. Every green roof counts. Tell your town or city or country why you think green roofs are important. And if they are not happening in your area – make a call to action to the authorities, companies and politicians.

Don’t forget to use the hashtag #WGRD2020 and help us celebrate making cities greener and more climate resilient by using green roofs.” ~ Dusty Gedge

Watch a short video of my own three favorite greenroofs (very hard to select just a handful!) which we posted on June 6 for #WGRD2020:

Get your images and videos of greenroofs – big and small, food farms, public greenspaces, sedum covers, and all those in between – ready for posting on Saturday, June 6, 2020 with #WGRD2020. Let’s make the inauguration of World Green Roof Day impactful and make a resounding social media splash with lovely, breathing greenroofs.

About GRO, the official UK body

The Green Roof Organisation (GRO) was founded in 2009 as a Special Interest Group and has completed its transition into a Trade Association and not-for-profit legal entity in the UK. A new 12-person board has been elected by the membership and the GRO Board elected Mark Harris of Radmat Building Products Ltd as Chairman, Chris Bridgman of Bridgman & Bridgman as Vice-Chair, and Chris Roddick of Bauder as Company Secretary.

GRO’s Vision is for every city and town in the United Kingdom to require high quality green roofs on new build flat roofs, whether for amenity, biodiversity gain, rainfall management or simply their pure beauty. They will aim to drive the retrofitting of green roofs to existing buildings, where structurally possible, for the same reasons.

GRO’s Mission is to support the delivery of high quality self-sustaining green roofs whilst informing the United Kingdom’s legislators, building developers, occupiers and educators about the wide range of environmental, social, health and curriculum benefits.

IFLA World Congress 18 – 19 July 2018, Singapore

IFLA World Congress 2018 Singapore

As our Media Partners, Greenroofs.com shares the latest on the IFLA (International Federation of Landscape Architects) World Congress 2018 Singapore with its readers, this year held in the fabulous island nation:

Biophilic Cities, Smart Nation and Future Resilience

The IFLA World Congress 2018, the largest and most significant event for landscape professionals in the world, returns to Singapore for the second time from 18 to 21 July 2018 at Sands Expo and Convention Centre, Marina Bay Sands, Singapore.  Themed “Biophilic City, Smart Nation, and Future Resilience,” the 55th ILFA World Congress is jointly organised by IFLA and Singapore Institute of Landscape Architects (SILA), and managed by SingEx Exhibitions.

IFLA World Congress 2018 Singapore

This event will examine how landscape architecture can inspire future urban designs to be more meaningfully connected to nature, bridge social connections and reinforce community resilience. The FLA World Congress Singapore 2018 will also serve as a dedicated platform for participating professionals, government bodies and academics to engage in meaningful and in-depth discussions regarding industry trends and challenges, as well as explore business opportunities and collaborations.

“Latest UN projections expect the world’s population to grow by 2.9 billion – equal to another China and India, in the next 33 years.” ~ The Guardian, 19 March 2018

The need for cities to transform into smart, sustainable and liveable spaces of the future prodded a change in terms of how “landscaping” is perceived around the world.  Landscape architects now have wider professional reach to take on more than merely landscaping.  In concert with urban planners and technologists, landscape architects are progressively making significant contributions to how cities look and function, making platforms such as the IFLA World Congress 2018 timely and apt for governments, academia and industry.

Hear from the industry experts at the 55th IFLA World Congress Singapore 2018 on 18 July – 19 July 2018, and be a part of the thought-provoking exchange on building a Smart Nation!

Voted one of 2013’s “100 Most Creative People in Business” from Fast Company – at # 3, no less, Diana Balmori has been artfully leading the combined fields of landscape design, architecture and urban planning for decades, and it is a must to watch her Keynote Video: “Green Roofs to New Cities” from our Greenroofs & Walls of the World Virtual Summit 2015 ~ Connecting the Planet with Living Architecture: People, Projects & Design above or on our VS2015 Virtual Summit 2015 playlist on our GreenroofsTV channel on YouTube.

It’s been a year since we concluded our third Greenroofs & Walls of the World Virtual Summit, and as promised, we are now releasing the 23 videos from our 30+ international speakers to the general public.

Based in New York City, Diana Balmori is the renown landscape designer and principal of Balmori Associates. She has received numerous accolades over the years, and has been internationally recognized for her progressive body of work.  Diana says, “The big picture is that half of the world lives in cities; it will be 2/3 by 2025.  Cities are major producers of all the things which are feeding climate change. Green roofs are a simple tool we could us to change this effect, if used at the macroscale.  Green roofs can also play an urban role as open space and as connectors.”

Diana was one of the early proponents of greenroofs and living architecture, and her 2005 research piece/inventory study on Long Island City – and its resulting “Asthma Alley” – demonstrated how living roofs could affect a direct health-oriented benefit in communities. This research resulted in greenroofs being constructed atop Silvercup Studios and the Gratz Industries Company.

Diana and her firm recently completed the enormous new governmental city of Sejong, Public Administration Town in South Korea.  Based on the previous natural attributes of the mountains and rivers on the site, her large masterplan introduced the idea of a landscape taking the primordial organizing idea to organize the architecture – the result is buildings interconnected with sweeping, continuous greenroofs.

All of these projects will be addressed in her Keynote video, along with others.  Her “Green Roofs to New Cities” video was produced by Stacked Up TV Productions, with visuals by Joseph Maida, Mark Dye, Efrain Mendez / archframe.net, Bilbao Ria 2000, University of Iowa and Balmori Associates with the design teams of each project.

Diana keeps an active voice in national policy and decision-making on topics that relate to landscape design, architecture and urban planning. She has served as: member of The United States Commission of Fine Arts in Washington, DC; a Senior Fellow of Dumbarton Oaks, Washington, DC; a member of the Allston Development Group at Harvard University, Boston, MA; on the Board of The Van Alen Institute, New York City; The Lower Manhattan Development Corporation for the World Trade Center Site, New York City; and as a Committee Member for the Comprehensive Design Plan for the White House.

Download the IGRA Guidelines for Green Roofs “Bridging Trades – Safe Section Changeover: Roofing Technology – Vegetation Technology”

Our colleagues over at IGRA – the International Green Roof Association – have just released their free downloadable 36-page PDF entitled IGRA Guidelines for Green Roofs “Bridging Trades – Safe Section Changeover: Roofing Technology – Vegetation Technology.”

IGRAGuidelinesforGreenRoofs

Editors Roland Appl, Wolfgang Ansel, and Sabine Frueh of IGRA say even the best laid greenroof plans can go wrong if the underlying roof is not prepared to meet demands.  This issue lead IGRA to develop the new guidelines, “Bridging Trades – Safe Section Changeover: Roofing Technology – Vegetation Technology”:

“The content of the IGRA Guidelines is made up of two main modules:

– A checklist that provides a clear and concise overview of current examination criteria for the roof and vegetation technology interface.
– A commentary volume that provides further explanations and graphic material of all technical terms and questions in the checklist.

The guideline is not only designed for Green Roof installers and roofers. It is also designed for architects, planners, and developers who can take advantage of the practical and legal references.” ~ IGRA
