Today we are spotlighting the individual “Urban and Social Needs of Green” short Inspiration Nook Video by the soft-spoken Catalan, Marc Grañén, a landscape artist and creator of PhytoKinetic, who has been constructing and developing greenroofs – even on vehicles – and greenwalls within northeastern Spain for several years.  During the Virtual Summit 2013 he graced us with his beautiful, almost poetic, video “Phyto Kinetic: Gardens in Movement,” which you can see here.

As you may know already, even if you are not presenting at the Virtual Summit, as an attendee you can submit your 3 minute (non-overtly commercial) video of research, ideas, projects, poster boards, thought leadership, etc., which are then followed by your own live Discussion Chat.

This series is focused around sparking conversation, ideas, dialogue and connections around a specific greenroof/wall-related topic – a mosaic of bright ideas for a greener world.

Marc says “Yes, we have a serious problem, as we haven’t understood what sustainability means.  Fortunately, there are more and more of us, who day by day, are working hard to solve this.  The path is long and hard, but full of shades.  As a landscape artist I always try to capture Nature at what it does best: exist.  And this happens because Nature itself is sustainable, otherwise it would have never existed.”

Bescanó, Spain. Marc Grañén says, “My artistic point of view of life and my intense love of natural landscapes make the perfect combination for what has become my daily occupation. I am a landscape artist. Nature is my inspiration and my family, my best teacher. We live in Bescanó, our small hometown in the northeast of Spain.

I’ve created artworks in China, Spain and Russia, and been a speaker in several conferences in the UK, Spain, the Netherlands, China, France… with interviews in media of all continents. I created PhytoKinetic, the first and unique worldwide patented system to make greenroofs on top of vehicles. I have created many private greenroof and greenwall projects, and more than a dozen educative edible greenwalls in Barcelona public schools.”

It’s been a year since we concluded our third Greenroofs & Walls of the World Virtual Summit, and as promised, we are now releasing the 23 videos from our 30+ international speakers to the general public.

Virtual Summit 2015 Video Greening World Inside Outside Mark PaulAlthough we’d known of him and his work for several years, we finally met Mark Paul, Australian horticulturalist and founder of The Greenwall Company in 2014 in Sydney at the excellent World Green Infrastructure Congress.

Virtual Summit 2015 Video Greening World Inside Outside Mark PaulIn Mark’s video you’ll understand the breadth of knowledge and experience of the soft spoken designer who started with epiphytes, lithophytes, and other amazing plants living on cliff faces in Rio de Janeiro almost 30 years ago.

Virtual Summit 2015 Video Greening World Inside Outside Mark PaulPaul has traveled around the world studying and collecting new plants for greenroofs and in particular, greenwalls, and he says “Greenwalls can be used to produce instant ‘greenspace’ both inside and out.  These beautiful structures of greenery bring new life and nature back into urban environments.”  His wide variety of photos and projects are proof!

Mark Paul

Virtual Summit 2015 Video Greening World Inside Outside Mark Paul

Sydney, Australia. “Over the past 25 years Mark Paul, founder of The Greenwall Company and a qualified horticulturist, has become a name synonymous with reclaiming the built environment, a passion he has had since childhood. Mark’s most recent achievements range from completion of one of the tallest greenwalls in Australia, implementation of a community schools program through to tailor-made residential installations in homes nation-wide. To date, Mark Paul has reclaimed thousands of sqm of the built environment.

Mark has pioneered a number of greenwalls and greenroof innovations with his formative landscape experiences and scientific background which has allowed for much experimentation, trial and testing with planting techniques, medias and methodology (and technology). These developments have put The Greenwall Company as a leader for greenwall and greenroofs in Australia. The Greenwall Company vision is to reclaim the built environment by clothing the facades of buildings with epiphytic and lithophytic planting to create a living, breathing architectural function to every building.

If you are interested in seeing how several living roofs have fared ecologically over a 10-year period, then you must see “The Great Green Roof Review” by Jenny Hill and Terry McGlade from our Greenroofs & Walls of the World Virtual Summit 2015 ~ Connecting the Planet with Living Architecture: People, Projects & Design above or on our VS2015 Virtual Summit 2015 playlist on our GreenroofsTV channel on YouTube.

Virtual Summit 2015 Video Great Green Roof Review Hill McGlade

The wonderful and affable greenroof pioneer Terry McGlade, formerly of Flynn Canada (and Gardens in the Sky), has been designing and installing thousands of square feet of biodiverse greenroofs in the Toronto area, and we know him as a dear colleague.  Jenny Hill is a multi-talented PhD candidate who has been working on an interdisciplinary vegetated roof study with the Daniel’s Faculty at the University of Toronto, whose research assesses the hydrological impacts of green roof design decisions.

They teamed up for “The Great Green Roof Review” collaborative video with great success as the retrospective delves into six of the oldest roofs in North America (Earth Rangers East School, Ryerson University, Jackman Avenue School, Toronto Botanical Garden, UTSC Arts & Administration Building, and the Royal Ontario Museum), examining the post-construction phases of greenroof management.

Jen and Terry ask: What happens when the manicured aesthetic ideal is rejected either intentionally or through neglect?  What it the long term viability of a greenroof as a piece of ecological urban infrastructure versus its survival as a horticultural canvas?  What can we learn from revisiting old projects and how can we design with the evolution of individual sites in mind?

Jenny Hill
