To be completed over three years, the total project encompasses over 20,000 square feet of vegetated roof space.  Expected to be completed in 2017, Kingsland Wildflowers has been growing their living roof project in phases and the Festival is in celebration of newly finished first 10,000 square feet of greenroof, Phase 1, as well as community engagement space in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

The Kingsland Wildflowers project is the result of neighborhood partnerships between local businesses and community organizations committed to environmental sustainability and community development.

Under construction, this central patio of bluestone will support a fountain that will provide water for visiting birds.

With funding provided by the Office of the New York State Attorney General and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation through the Greenpoint Community Environmental Fund, during the Kingsland Wildflower Festival the public will be able to enjoy interactive activities for folks of all ages and:

“…explore three roofs that have been planted with a combination of native grasses and wild flowers while enjoying panoramic views of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and Newtown Creek.

The event will also offer the chance for visitors to engage with partner organizations working on green infrastructure and environmental sustainability programs in North Brooklyn. There will be food, beer and music as well as activities and learning opportunities for children and families.” ~ Kingsland Wildflowers

The vision, conceived through partnerships between property owner Broadway Stages, wildlife experts at New York City Audubon, Greenpoint local landscaping company Alive Structures and other community partners, will provide the neighborhood with living and growing infrastructure to support native New York City wildlife. The project also has a specific focus on developing educational programming in the space related to sustainable conservation practices and wildlife protection.

“The Kingsland Wildflower roof will provide a green corridor of native grass and flower habitat for NYC’s bird and insect populations.” ~ Marni Majorelle, founder and owner of Alive Structures and Kingsland Wildflowers partner
