Project Description & Details

Soaring 1,454 feet above Midtown Manhattan, the Empire State Building is the “World’s Most Famous Office Building.” With new investments in energy-efficiency, building-wide infrastructure upgrades, public areas, and amenities totaling more than $550 million, the grand Art Deco skyscraper continues to attract corporate office tenants in a diverse array of industries from around the world. Declared by the American Society of Civil Engineers to be one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World, four roofs have been greened at the Empire State Building by Xero Flor America, totaling 9,100 sf:

21st Floor East & West: XF301 + ¾”XT; the dry weight is 7 lb/sf, and the saturated weight is 13 lb/sf. The green roofs on the 21st floor feature rooftop patios with outdoor furniture for the enjoyment of office tenants in the adjacent offices. Xero Flor Plant Mixes: Standard Northern Climate Xero Flor Mix, supplemented with moss species.

25th Floor Northwest: XF322 Sedum-Moss System with a dry weight of 4 lb/sf and saturated weight of 8 lb/sf. This option was used here because this roof area receives little direct sunlight and is not accessible. Xero Flor Plant Mixes: Xero Flor Sedum-Moss Mix.

30th Floor West: XF301 + ¾”XT; inaccessible. Xero Flor Plant Mixes: Standard Northern Climate Xero Flor Mix, supplemented with moss species.

Referring to its comprehensive energy efficiency retrofit program, Tom Durels, executive vice president of Malkin Holdings, L.L.C., which supervises the LEED-EB Gold certified Empire State Building, says “The new green roofs further demonstrate our sustainability leadership and add appealing green space that enhances the value of office space for our tenants.”
