Project Description & Details

Planted in May and located just past one of the main pedestrian entrances to Disney Main Street, Orlando, the new Starbucks green roof highlights the facade of its 500th LEED store, not only bringing the many benefits green roofs offer to the surrounding environment but also providing an opportunity for visitors to view close up imagination- and sustainability-inspired design. Senior Designer for Starbucks, David Daniels’? vision of the green roof atop the new store grew from an idea and conceptual poster to a thriving, tropical lemongrass sustainable ecosystem. Inside are 70-inch digital display panels with built-in cameras, a moss Starbucks siren sculpture by Paloma Teppa, reclaimed wood and LED store lights. Outside, LED green roof lighting accentuates the green roof during Disney Main Street?s lively nights.

Kevin Songer of MetroVerde designed the green roof with their hurricane strength system.  Irrigated with a micro-drip system during summer droughts, the 1,800 sf Starbucks Disney Orlando green roof is planted with lemongrass, Cymbopogon citratus. Cradle to cradle sustainability is woven throughout the green roof system and plantings. Coffee grounds are saved from daily store operations, recycled through composting and used to feed the green roof plants. Soil media for the green roof was developed through the University of Central Florida?’s Stormwater Management Academy by Dr. Marty Wanielista and Mike Hardin. The green roof plants attenuate and filter stormwater runoff, helping to protect the adjacent Lake Buena Vista water bodies. Over the next year, Starbucks and Disney will bring four more Starbucks locations to guests.
