Project Description & Details

The Rapid (Interurban Transit Partnership) is the authority that provides a variety of public transportation services for the Grand Rapids metro area and beyond. After extensive remediation in 2004, the $22.7 million Rapid Central Station is the first U.S. transportation facility to receive LEED® certification. Constructed on a reclaimed brownfield site, the 51,000 sf station was inspired by the Grand River rapids and features a white undulating fiberglass roof structure over the 17-bus platform. A green roof covers the majority of the adjacent Surface Transportation Center building, located on two separate sections of the roof.

An unsuccessful carpet type green roof installed originally in 2004 was replaced by LiveRoof in 2008. The lower roof features the LiveRoof Standard Modular Green Roof System with a 4″ soil depth and due to weight restrictions, the upper roof uses a modified lightweight system, the LiveRoof X-Lite, which is 2.5″ deep. The plant mix is the same for both levels, and includes these Sedum varieties: Sedum album ‘Athoum’, S. ellacombianum, S. floriferum ‘Weihenstephaner Gold’, S. hybridum ‘Immergrunchen’, S. reflexum ‘Green Spruce’, S. rupestre ‘Angelina’, S. sexangulare, S. spurium ‘Green Mantle’, S. spurium ‘Royal Pink’, and S. spurium ‘Voo Doo’.
