Project Description & Details

With its limestone façade and sleek modernist lines, the International Style 1133 Avenue of the Americas tower led the transformation of Avenue of the Americas into a business hub. A $10 million building enhancement program for the 1.1 million sf of world-class commercial office space was completed in January 2013 by The Durst Organization, including greenroofs.

Kelly Luckett, President of Green Roof Blocks, says “The experience has been equivalent to working on a master’s degree in material handling. For example, this particular building’s freight elevator only went to the 45th floor.” Yet, modular Green Paks greenroof systems from Green Roof Blocks now thrive 47 and 48 stories high in the air on Sixth Ave – officially Avenue of the Americas – in midtown Manhattan. Students from High School for Environmental Studies research the plants here to determine the benefits of green roofs in high-rise settings such as Manhattan. The Durst Organization has installed over one acre of green roofs within their portfolio.
