Greenroofs.com Project of the Week: 3/11/13
International Institute of Tropical Forestry (IITF)
San Juan, Puerto Rico, USA
12,600 sf. Greenroof
Project Description & Details
Located in San Juan’s Botanical Gardens, the mission of the International Institute of Tropical Forestry (IITF) is to develop and disseminate scientifically-based knowledge that contributes to the conservation of forests, wildlife, and watersheds of the American Tropics. Updating and restoring its headquarters complex, the new design will reduce the actual environmental footprint with a modern storm water management system that incorporates green roofs, grass parking, rainwater harvesting and retention ponds.
Architect Jeannette Rullan from RMA Architects, greenroof consultant David L. Aponte from PRGD, and USDA engineer Juan Vissepo designed the three green roofs as an experimental intervention that would further the understanding in hydrological, thermal and ecological behavior/benefits in a sub-tropical scenario. ZinCo‘s green roof material and rooflite extensive growing media was installed on all three green roofs. A total of 22 species where used – around 16,000 plugs were installed on the project.
