Project Description & Details

With 840,000 gross square feet of exhibit space, the Javits Convention Center is New York City’s largest venue for conventions, trade shows and special events. Its major renovation project includes a new roof, re-doing the building’s signature curtain wall with high-performance glass, upgrades to the mechanical and electrical systems, and interior reconfigurations to enhance the visitor experience as well as boost operational efficiency. Early on, plans to incorporate a lightweight green roof was the preferred alternative to concrete pavers because of its contribution to the goal of earning LEED ® Silver status.

According to designers FXFOWLE Architects and Epstein Global, a green roof was also desirable from a design perspective because taller buildings are on the drawing boards for the area. The lightweight vegetative mats for the Javits green roof include 14 different varieties of Sedum which promote greater diversity and sustainability. The vegetative mats are being grown for a full 9-12 months at a farm in upstate New York and will thereby be adapted to the regional climate. Clayton Rugh, Ph.D., General Manager and Technical Director, Xero Flor America, manufacturer of the green roof system selected for the Javits, has calculated that the green roof will prevent approximately 6.8 million gallons of run-off per year. At present, the green roof installation is one-third complete.

Don’t miss Dr. Clayton Rugh at the Greenroofs & Walls of the World™ Virtual Summit 2013!  Join him on the “Environmental Healing through Phytoremediation – Chapter One” Panel with Patrick Carey (Moderator), Dr. Alan Darlington and Dr. Paul Mankiewicz on Wednesday February 13 at 3:00 pm EST, Q & A at 4:00.
