November 28 - December 9: Conference of the Parties COP17 2011 Climate Summit, Durban, South Africa
The 17th United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 17), will be held in the sunny city of Durban, South Africa. The City’s continued commitment to broadening the climate change dialogue with other South African cities, as well as its respected reputation within the international climate change arena, has secured its position as a climate change leader. The COP 17-CMP 7 will mark a critical moment in the ongoing international climate change negotiations, and Durban is a fitting host for an event of this magnitude and significance. Many parts of Africa already currently face droughts year round. If the climate over Africa shifts, bearing even less rainfall, a resulting food shortage will be eminent. This is one of the aspects the Green Roof Project of Durban plans to address by implementing food growth strategies on city rooftops. City residents would be able to grow their own food locally and sell it locally, creating a sustainable market for the city.

August 9: Free Webinar on Hydrological Performance of a Green Roof
The Green Infrastructure Webinar Series welcomes Nathan Griswold, ASLA, GRP, American Hydrotech, Inc., on August 9th at 2 pm EDT to discuss the hydrological performance of a green roof near Baltimore, MD. The project originally called for a highly emissive roof membrane to gain LEED credits and achieve the ultimate LEED Silver goal. This construction, however, also required underground storm water management tanks to meet municipal storm water quantity and quality requirements. To accommodate the tanks, removal of massive amounts of bedrock would also be required. After careful analysis and customization of various components to optimize the green roof assembly and meet project LEED goals, the underground storage and filtration requirements were completely eliminated and building owners saved more than $75,000 on project completion.

May 24-28: RHS Chelsea Flower Show, Royal Hospital Chelsea in Chelsea, London
The RHS Chelsea Flower Show, officially the Great Spring Show, is a garden show held each year on five days in May by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) in the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea in Chelsea, London. It is the most famous such show in the United Kingdom, perhaps the most famous gardening event in the world and part of London's summer social season. Popular parts of the Chelsea Flower Show include the show gardens designed by leading names and the centerpiece of the floral marquee. This is the ultimate event in the gardening calendar. It’s the place to see; and to be seen at. Tickets always sell out, so be in quick. This May's Chelsea Flower Show will feature its first full-scale sustainable "rain garden", inspired by Victorian horticulturalist William Robinson. The RBC New Wild Garden is designed by Dr Nigel Dunnett to use every drop of rain that falls on it. The central building, a shipping container, will have a "living roof" and drainage and water collection pools reuse rainfall. Robinson's 1870 The Wild Garden introduced "naturalised" planting.

January 11 - February 15: Green Roof Plants Course, Longwood Gardens, Kennett Square, PA
Want to join the movement for environmentally sustainable gardening in your space? For most of us a green roof is not an option on our property. But there are lots of opportunities to use the kind of plants found on a green roof in other situations like gardens and containers. The plants you'll study are characterized by low and rapid growth, high drought tolerance, and low maintenance - think sedums! This class is unlike the other Ornamental Horticulture classes you've taken at Longwood. Instead of plant walks, your "garden experience" will be one that you take home. Each student will receive a labeled tray of required plants for study in the class. Your challenge will be to study, care for them and plan for their future somewhere in your landscape. The instructor is Edmund C. Snodgrass, a fifth generation farmer and nurseryman, is president and founder of Emory Knoll Farms, Inc. and Green Roof Plants, North America's first nursery specializing in green roof plants and horticultural consulting. There will also be an opportunity to visit Emory Knoll Farms (www.greenroofplants.com) on your own to see and "study" its living library.
