November 10: Cleantech Corridor's Meeting,
New York, NY
As industry experts from Expo-Z, Bellett Construction, E4, NYSERDA
and the city participated in a discussion moderated by Barry Hersh
of the Center for the Sustainable Built Environment at the NYU Schack
Institute of Real Estate. What are the differences between
green rooftops and white rooftops? Wednesday evening some
200 came to the 10th Fl of the Kimmel center at NYU and with the
beautiful uptown skyline, including the empire State building, listened
in rapt attention as the proponents of white roofs and green roofs
discussed the merits and benefits of these two old but newly emerging
roof technologies. The conclusion? That depends. Certainly having
a green roof will likely have a greater impact but green roof are
not always feasible and white roofs are definitely in order where
weight is an issue. What remains true is that both offer significant
advantages by lowering the rooftop temperatures and thereby our
city’ temperature. There is much more but why not come to our events
and become informed as well as meet others who believe in the Cleantech
transformation.

OCTOBER
2010
October 31 - November 2: Garden+Landscaping
Middle East 2010, Dubai, UAE
One of the key exhibitors at this year’s Garden+Landscaping Middle
East will be Dubai Municipality. The government authority will focus
on their green project initiatives, particularly their ‘Green Roofs’
project which they have been promoting throughout 2010. With growing
awareness on the importance of sustaining the environment, the green
roofs concept has come to the UAE and is soon expected to spread
across the entire GCC and wider region. With these green roof initiatives
comes an increased demand in vegetation and other gardening equipment.
Some of the aims of a green roof are to absorb rainwater, provide
insulation and lower urban air temperatures and thus combat the
heat island effect. Equipment required to create a green roof includes
root barriers, drainage and irrigation systems, appropriate vegetation
and a water proofing membrane, all of which will be on display during
Garden+Landscaping Middle East.

August 1-6: 95th Annual Meeting of the Ecological Society of
America, Pittsburgh, PA
In contrast to the high level of certainty of the phenomenon
of global warming, environmental scientists—including and especially
ecologists—have been less certain of its far-reaching effects, although
recent evidence suggests that these effects can be far ranging:
from altered plant phenology to enhanced occurrence of disease to
exacerbated glacial retreat to increased frequency and intensity
of tropical storms. Indeed, global warming will continue to exert
influence at virtually all levels of ecological organization, from
individuals to landscapes. At its 2010 Annual Meeting in Pittsburgh,
PA, the Ecological Society of America will place global warming
at center stage to draw a critical combination of scientists, policy
makers, and concerned citizens to understand further its causes
and consequences and to elucidate a clear scenario for addressing
what is perhaps the most serious environmental threat facing the
biosphere.

Hosts Vertical Gardens Exhibition, San Francisco, CA
The American Institute of Architects, San Francisco chapter (AIA
San Francisco) and Center for Architecture + Design Gallery will
present Vertical Gardens, an
exhibition on view February 18-April 30 at 130 Sutter Street,
Suite 600, San Francisco. The show will reflect the emergence of
green roofs and walls over the last decade to combat the lack of
flora in the city. Vertical farms and gardens are also being envisioned
as new ways to feed local and organic foods to city dwellers. Largely
based on the principles of hydroponics, vertical gardens are mostly
self-sustaining because they capture large amounts of natural sunlight
and water, and use wind as an energy source. The exhibition showcases
architectural models, renderings, drawings, and photographs that
depict or imagine a vertical farm, urban garden, or green roof.
