The Université de Montréal and the Goethe Institut Montréal
presented the conference "4 Vues sur le Paysage" with
lectures on December 6, 2005 by two
prominent individuals: Michel Corajoud, lecture at 5:00 p.m.
entitled "Le processus de conception et de réalisation d’un
grand parc" - "The Development of a Conception for a Large
Park," - and Cornelia Hahn Oberlander, lecture at 6:30 p.m.
entitled "The making of the landscape and the siting of the
Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly Building in
Yellowknife."
Both lectures were held at the Université
de Montréal Amphithéâtre de la Faculté de l’aménagement (local
1120) 2940, chemin de la Côte Ste-Catherine, Montréal, Canada.
Ten years ago in Yellowknife, the capital city of the Northwest
Territories, the Canadian landscape architect Cornelia Hahn
Oberlander created a unique landscape for the Legislative
Assembly building. Oberlander followed the strategy of
'least intervention'- to avoid disruption and destruction of the
arctic tundra.
Indigenous plants were used exclusively - such wild roses and
Kinnicknick on the rocky site. All trees were retained.
Existing spruce and birch frame the remarkable architecture of
Matsuzaki Wright, Pin Matthews, which nestles into the rock
outcropping like an igloo.
Cornelia Hahn Oberlander is considered "Canada's premier
landscape architect" and was given the Order of Canada in 1990.
Born in 1924 in Muelheim/Ruhr (Germany), she fled Nazi Germany
in 1938 with her mother and siblings. At Harvard
University she studied with Walter Gropius and since coming to
Canada in 1953 has made her mark on Canadian cities,
particularly Vancouver, with her roof top gardens and green
spaces. The young German photographer Etta Gerdes from
Dortmund followed the traces of Oberlander across Canada.
The exhibit "Quatre Vues" will present a few of these
photos at the Centre d'exposition of the
Université de Montréal until December 10. A complete exhibit will be presented at the
Canadian Centre for Architecture as of May 10, 2006. In "Quatre
Vues" three other landscape architects are presented: the German
Günther Grzimek (Olympiapark in Munich), the Brazilian Roberto
Burle Marx and the Frenchman Michel Corajoud. As stated above,
Michel Corajoud will also give a lecture on December 6 at 5 pm
at the Amphitheatre of the Faculty of Landscape Architecture on
"The Development of a Conception for a Large Park."

The Northeast Sustainable Energy
Association's 2005 Green Buildings Open House was part of
the American Solar Energy Society's National Solar Tour and was held
on Saturday, October 1, 2005 from 10 am – 4 pm, including almost 40
sites located throughout the northeast U.S., many with greenroofs and
earth-sheltered homes. Throughout the Northeast, homes and other
buildings are taking advantage of clean renewable energy and other green
building technologies. On Saturday, October 1 from 10am to 4pm, hundreds
of these buildings opened their doors to the public for the Green
Buildings Open House, featuring the National Solar Tour.
This event, which is part of the American Solar Energy Society's
National Solar Tour, offered a unique opportunity for people to see
first-hand how clean energy and green building practices can be put to
work. Homeowners and building managers were on site to describe their
green building features and answer questions. Members of the public
learned basic principles of green building, such as designing for solar
heating ("passive solar"), energy-efficient building techniques such as
superinsulation and air sealing, safe indoor air quality, and
resource-efficient and healthy building materials. Many of the buildings
demonstrate how solar hot water is collected and stored, how
photovoltaics can be placed on or integrated into the shell of a
building to produce electricity, and how wind can be used to generate
power. The Green Buildings Open House demystified green buildings,
proving that they are comfortable, affordable, and attractive.
NESEA organized the Green Buildings Open House in the six New
England States, plus Delaware, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.

The AIA of
Wichita Kansas organized the Greening 2 Kansas Conference for
sustainable design, held Friday August 12, 2005 at the Hyatt
Regency in downtown Wichita. This one day conference brought about
different leaders from the building industry to discuss the key issues
facing our practice in regards to sustainable design. Chris DeVolder, of
360 Architecture in Kansas City, was the key note speaker. He spoke
about specific areas that architects, engineers, and manufacturing
representatives can work together on, in designing sustainable
structures. It gave an important educational
opportunity for architects to see the different products that
manufacturers have to offer that are new to the design field. They
witnessed the progress that has been made in making sustainable products and
that the cost for these products can be comparable to other
non-sustainable products.
What AIA of Wichita is wanting to accomplish is to raise the awareness
and education among the construction field (architects, engineers,
contractors, etc.) and merge them with manufacturers, all within the
belief that sustainable design can be achieved everyday. Exhibitors had ample opportunity to display and advertise their sustainable
products throughout the day to many building leaders.

Greening the Heartland 2005: Cost, Practice and Policy was held on
May 31 - June 3, 2005 at the Palmer House Hilton, in Chicago, IL,
presented by the City of Chicago and sponsored by the U.S. Green
Building Council's - Chicago and Regional Heartland Chapters.
According to the website, "The Chicago Standard is an important part of
the City of Chicago's effort to make itself into the most
environmentally friendly city in the United States. Well underway from
the top down and from the bottom up, Richard M. Daley continues his
re-making and re-shaping the "city that works" sustainably.
Buildings and cities will not achieve high levels of sustainability
unless the businesses, transit, utilities, homeowners, industry and
agriculture that support and define them are sustainable themselves. The
City of Chicago has become "The Living Laboratory" where academia,
business and community leaders, can integrate with government and
community organizations to explore, develop and support enterprise
models based on the tenets of sustainability.
The 2005 Greening the Heartland conference will focus on innovation and
the ability to implement sustainability and market these practices in
the region. (Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky,
