Project Description & Details

The International Monetary Fund (IMF), also known as the world’s bank, headquartered in Washington, D.C., has two buildings across the street from one another, Headquarters 1 and Headquarters 2. In 2009, IMF’s Headquarters #2 became LEED Gold certified, and in 2013 HQ2 achieved LEED Platinum Existing Building: Operations and Maintenance. Employing new Barrett Ram Tough 250 rubberized asphalt, Barrett Company provided a 20 year Vegetative Roofing System warranty for both greenroof projects.

At the HQ2 Building, although the green roof itself is inaccessible, employees and visitors may enjoy the scenic overlook from a patio area with tables and chairs. The existing roofing system was a hot applied rubberized asphalt membrane installed just a few years ago, but realizing the strong need for greenroofs in the Capitol District, the IMF decided to convert the existing ballasted assembly to a greenroofing system. The new and old membrane system was covered with a 4 inch deep extensive green roofing system with 5 species of sedum using pre-vegetated sedum mats from Moerings Sempergreen.
